Stamp a repeat pattern on silver with a scaled drawing, indexed datums, matched samples, sound tools, stable support, controlled strikes, staged checks, and records.

This exercise creates a straight repeat border on a flat sterling-silver practice panel. It does not cover a hallmark, maker's mark, legal fineness mark, curved finished object, stone-set item, plated stock, or historic piece.

Step 1: define the pattern

Draw the finished panel at full size. State:

  • panel length, width, and thickness;
  • trim and construction allowances;
  • border baseline and edge offset;
  • motif width and orientation;
  • center-to-center pitch;
  • number of impressions;
  • permitted end margins;
  • acceptable depth and reverse witness;
  • flatness and surface limits.

Calculate the occupied pattern length from the selected pitch and number of centers. Divide the remaining space deliberately. Do not compress the final two gaps because an early estimate was wrong.

Step 2: prepare matching samples

Cut at least two coupons from the same stock or a documented equivalent. Finish them to the same pre-stamp condition. Mark the rolling direction if known.

Test the stamp upright and at small controlled angle errors so you recognize partial faces and doubled edges. Vary only one factor at a time: support, strike force, or number of blows. Record face depth, reverse witness, and released flatness.

Step 3: inspect the tools and station

The hammer face must be sound and appropriate for the struck end. The stamp must have a legible ID, undamaged design face, sound body, and struck end fit for use. Retire a cracked or mushroomed tool under the shop's procedure.

California's hand-tool ergonomics guidance classifies punches as struck or hammered tools and distinguishes precision from power tasks when selecting handles. It supports deliberate tool selection, but it does not set jewelry stamp size, hammer mass, silver depth, or a safe force for this panel.

Set the bench height so the stamp can remain upright without a raised shoulder or sharply bent wrist. Provide the eye protection and any hearing control required by the risk assessment. Clear the backswing and keep other people outside the strike area.

Step 4: transfer fixed datums

On protected stock, mark the centerline, pattern start, pattern end, panel center, and every motif center. Use a square and dividers or another validated layout method. Add a small orientation arrow outside the final trim line.

Inspect the sequence under magnification before stamping. A layout mark at the wrong coordinate should be corrected in the plan, not hidden under a deeper impression.

Step 5: secure the support

Clean the panel and support. Place the metal on the same support used for the accepted coupon. Prevent both from sliding without putting fingers near the stamp.

Make a dry registration at each anchor point. Confirm the stamp's orientation mark is visible to the operator and aligned the same way each time.

Step 6: stamp the anchors

Stamp the panel center first, then the start and end centers if the accepted plan permits this sequence. Use the tested grip and strike. Lift the stamp vertically before inspecting. Do not rock it to see the impression.

Check orientation, location, depth, reverse witness, and flatness after each anchor. If an anchor fails, stop. Filling the rest of the border will not correct the datum.

Step 7: fill the intervals

Work from the anchors toward the centers of the remaining gaps. This divided sequence keeps any small spacing error local instead of carrying it across the entire border.

After every short group, compare the marks with the center map. Turn the work only when the plan requires it, and confirm orientation again after every turn.

Step 8: inspect and release

Use raking light on the face and reverse. Measure:

Orientation Does each motif face the specified direction?
Depth Is the range within the approved sample band?
Reverse Is witness marking within the stated limit?
Flatness Does the released panel meet its gauge or datum?

Photograph the accepted panel with scale and orientation. Record the stock, stamp, hammer, support, coupon, sequence, measurements, and any stopped condition.

Common questions

Should every impression receive the same number of blows?

Use the validated sample method, but judge the resulting depth and condition. A blind extra blow can create a double strike.

Why stamp the center before filling from one end?

Anchor positions divide spacing error into smaller intervals and protect the overall composition.

Can I stamp after the panel is curved?

Only with support and registration designed for that form. This procedure is for a flat practice panel.

What if one mark is slightly light?

Stop and assess registration, depth allowance, reverse condition, and the visual standard before attempting another strike.
