Surface decoration is not one technique. A polished hammer texture, a struck motif, a chased line, raised repousse, and a cut engraved line leave different geometry and evidence. The design should name the intended process, surface zone, depth range, orientation, border, and areas that must remain untouched.
Translate the drawing into metal movement
Begin with a full-size drawing and a material record. Mark construction boundaries, solder zones, stone seats, edges, bends, hallmarks, and final trimming allowance. Then assign each line or field a job.

Do not label every hammered mark as engraving. A V&A account of its silver interpretation project says its films separate engraving, chasing, and embossing so viewers can see and hear the distinct effects. That museum program supports the distinction, but it is not a workshop procedure for a particular alloy, pitch, punch, or graver.
Make a sample system
Use scrap from the same alloy, thickness, temper, and surface preparation as the work. A useful coupon includes:
- the tool ID and face sketch;
- support material and thickness;
- hammer or hand pressure used;
- tool angle and orientation mark;
- strike count or pass number;
- face and reverse photographs;
- depth, distortion, and finish notes.
Keep failed samples. They show the boundary between a readable impression and unacceptable damage. A perfect impression on thicker copper does not prove the same setting is safe on thin sterling silver.
Match support to the process
A flat steel block resists movement and can produce a crisp struck impression, but it can also transfer shock and expose the reverse to damage. Wood, leather, urethane, sandbags, and pitch yield differently. Chasing and repousse often need a support that holds the work while allowing planned displacement.
Secure the support against sliding. Keep hands outside the strike path, provide task-specific eye protection, and isolate sharp tools. Pitch, resins, adhesives, and heated supports require their own material, ventilation, temperature, fire, and skin-contact controls.
Control the sequence
Work from fixed datums. For a repeating border, establish start, center, end, and corner positions before filling the spaces. For chasing, rough in the main lines before adding fine detail. For repousse, raise broad volumes before chasing the front. For engraving, practice the line direction, start, stop, and chip exit on a coupon.
Avoid correcting one weak mark with an unplanned second blow. First determine whether the tool can be registered exactly and whether another strike would exceed the depth or distort the reverse. Sometimes the correct decision is to preserve a small variation.
Inspect the whole object
Use raking light and magnification to inspect starts, stops, joins, burrs, torn edges, and doubled profiles. Compare the reverse for raised witness marks or support contamination. Recheck flatness, curvature, opening, wall thickness, and nearby joints after every substantial stage.
Record the tool, support, sequence, sample, measurements, deviations, corrections, and final acceptance. A close photograph should include scale and orientation.
Common questions
Is chasing the same as engraving?
No. Chasing displaces the surface with punches, while engraving cuts and removes metal with a graver.
Can one test strike set the production force?
Only if the sample matches the work and the result meets the depth, reverse, dimension, and surface limits. Repeatability still needs to be checked.
Should decoration happen before forming?
It depends on the process and design. Later forming may stretch or rotate a pattern, while decorating a finished form may make support difficult.
Can polishing hide a bad stamp?
Polishing may soften edges, but it also removes metal and can make a doubled or drifting impression less controlled. Diagnose before finishing.
