How to anneal and form a silver band in controlled stages
Anneal and form a silver band using documented stock, measured layout, alloy-specific heat, safe cooling, staged mandrel work, springback checks, and inspection.

This exercise forms a simple open practice band from documented silver strip. It does not cover a soldered ring, stone-set object, plated material, or a wearable cuff whose opening and fit require a separate design and safety review.
Step 1: make the process card
Record:
- alloy, supplier, batch, and temper;
- strip length, width, and thickness;
- required inside contour and opening;
- minimum section and edge radius;
- approved annealing range and indicator;
- cooling and cleaning method;
- torch, fuel, tip, support, exhaust, and fire controls;
- forming mandrel and hammer or mallet.
If no reliable annealing information exists for the stock, stop and obtain it rather than using color memory from another alloy.
Step 2: prepare and measure
Square or shape the ends as the drawing requires. Deburr edges without reducing the stated width. Mark the centerline and quarter points, then measure at each point.
Photograph both faces under raking light. Existing scratches, pits, rolling marks, and edge defects belong in the starting record so they are not mistaken for forming damage.
Step 3: inspect the tool pair
Confirm that the mandrel is clean, secure, and free of raised damage. Inspect the hammer or mallet face and handle. The contact must move the strip without stamping unwanted sharp defects.
Historical research on Paul Revere's workshop describes work hardening and annealing as linked stages in shaping silver. That history does not set a temperature, quench method, or torch procedure for modern proprietary stock; the current alloy specification controls this exercise.
Step 4: anneal safely
Move combustibles away, verify local exhaust, complete the torch inspection, and prepare a marked hot-metal landing area. Wear the task-specific eye and body protection required by the shop.
Heat the strip with the approved flame and motion so the relevant section approaches the specified condition evenly. Thin ends can heat faster than the center. Do not stare only at one spot or use melting flux, redness, or time as a universal indicator unless the qualified procedure specifies it.
Shut down the torch correctly. Treat strip, support, tweezers, and binding as hot.
Step 5: cool and clean
Use the specified cooling method for the documented alloy and stage. Quenching is not automatically correct. If the procedure requires pickle or another cleaner, use labeled compatible tools, ventilation, protective equipment, rinsing, and waste controls.
Dry and inspect for melting, scale, firestain, pits, contamination, and distortion. Do not form a damaged strip.
Step 6: begin the curve
Support the strip at the center against the mandrel. Apply light controlled blows or pressure in a balanced sequence toward the ends. Keep the strip square to the mandrel unless the drawing specifies taper or twist.
Turn the work often enough to see both faces and edges. Do not hold fingers between the work and mandrel or inside a closing curve.
Step 7: measure each pass
Remove the band without prying against an edge. Check:

Return only high or flat areas to the mandrel. Do not thin the opposite side merely to mimic symmetry.
Step 8: decide whether to reanneal
Use the process card's deformation or hardness criteria. Rising springback and resistance may signal work hardening, but they do not replace the approved limit. Stop for any crack or edge split.
If another anneal is permitted, repeat the full heat-safety, cooling, cleaning, and inspection sequence. Record each cycle.
Step 9: final release
The practice band passes only when contour, opening, symmetry, minimum section, edge radius, and surface condition meet the drawing. Clean and store the tools, segregate filings, and attach the final measurements and images to the job record.
Common questions
Must silver glow during annealing?
Do not use glow as a universal rule. Follow the specific alloy and shop procedure under suitable lighting.
Should the band be quenched immediately?
Only if the documented process requires it and the construction permits it.
Why does one end curve more than the other?
Check annealing uniformity, starting geometry, support, blow sequence, section, and center alignment.
Can a mandrel set the final size by itself?
No. Measure the released work because springback and taper affect the result.
