  • Datums, centerline, bend line, forming courses, and keep areas are marked.
  • Minimum wall, web, edge radius, and opening are stated.
  • Annealing and rework limits are defined.
  • Unknown, plated, filled, repaired, or historic material has separate approval.

Hammer

  • Hammer type, mass, face shape, and material fit the task.
  • Face is clean and has the intended polish or texture.
  • No chip, crack, mushrooming, loose head, split handle, or sharp grip remains.
  • Swing clearance is open above, behind, and beside the operator.
  • Eye protection and other task controls are in place.

OSHA's hand-tool requirements prohibit unsafe hand tools and require sound, tight wooden handles and impact tools free of mushroomed heads. Apply the standards governing the workplace and remove questionable tools from service.

Stake, mandrel, and support

  • Working contour matches the planned movement.
  • Surface is clean and free from unintended raised damage.
  • Stake or mandrel is secured in a rated holder.
  • Base, anvil, stump, block, or sandbag cannot shift.
  • Work contacts the support at the planned point.
  • Hands remain outside pinch and closing zones.
  • Tool cannot tip or eject under a glancing blow.

Body and work cycle

  • Working height permits a neutral, balanced stance.
  • Grip and handle length do not concentrate pressure in the palm.
  • Work can be rotated without overreaching.
  • Blow pattern, direction, and overlap are stated.
  • Breaks or task rotation address repeated impact and grip.

Annealing gate

  • Stock-specific procedure and indicators are available.
  • Torch operator, ventilation, fire controls, and hot-metal zone are ready.
  • Coatings, stones, solder, fills, and enclosed spaces are assessed.
  • Heating range, time, atmosphere, cooling, and cleaning are recorded.
  • Work is inspected after every cycle.
  • Cycle count and reason are entered on the traveler.

Measurement gate

  • Work is measured off the tool in its released state.
  • Thickness is checked at named high-risk stations.
  • Paired features are compared from a fixed datum.
  • Radius, taper, depth, rim, opening, or length meets the stage target.
  • Springback is recorded rather than corrected by guesswork.
  • Enough finishing allowance remains.

Surface and defect gate

  • Raking light shows no new sharp dent, fold, crack, or embedded debris.
  • Tool marks match the intended pattern and depth.
  • Edges remain smooth enough for the next operation.
  • No abrasive correction hides a low section.
  • Suspect lines are inspected before further forming.
  • Rework stays within dimension and thickness limits.

Closeout

  • Final dimensions, images, tool pair, cycles, and deviations are attached.
  • Tools are cleaned, inspected, and stored securely.
  • Filings and scrap retain alloy identity.
  • Acceptance, rework, or rejection is signed and dated.

Common questions

Can a polished hammer face still be unsafe?

Yes. The head, eye, handle, balance, and task fit also matter.

Should measurements be taken on the mandrel?

Use released measurements for acceptance because springback and tool taper affect the result.

Is annealing required after a fixed number of blows?

No universal count applies. Use the documented alloy and process limits.

Can a deep tool mark be polished out later?

Only if measured material-removal and surface limits allow it.
