Piercing uses an entry hole and a threaded jeweler's saw blade to remove an interior shape. Sawing can also define an outside profile. Both operations combine layout, support, blade setup, body position, rhythm, and inspection.
Plan the geometry
Mark three things before cutting:
- The design line.
- The side that stays in the work.
- Areas that require later filing, solder fit, forming, or finishing.
A centerline, datum edge, or pair of measured reference points makes it easier to detect drift. On symmetrical work, preserve the reference until both halves have been compared.
Do not place fine openings so close together that the remaining web cannot survive fabrication and use. Material, thickness, work hardening, later forming, and service load all affect that decision.
Select and install the blade
Choose a blade that provides several teeth in contact with the stock rather than one coarse tooth repeatedly catching an edge. Manufacturer numbering and tooth counts vary, so consult the blade maker's chart for the actual product.
Install the teeth in the cutting direction specified for the frame and technique. Clamp the blade squarely, tension it consistently, and check that it tracks in one plane. Replace bent, dull, rusted, or damaged blades.
GIA's sharp-corner sawing lesson states that the work should be firmly supported on a flat, level bench pin and describes cutting around a corner with the blade moving. It supports that technique, not every blade choice or hand position in this guide.
Set the bench and body
Use a secure bench pin or equivalent support appropriate to the work. Sit so the forearm and saw can move vertically without a raised shoulder or sharply bent wrist. Light the line without glare.
Eye protection must fit the task and shop rules. Tie back hair and remove loose items. Keep the free hand beside the supported work, never directly below or ahead of the blade. Obtain hands-on instruction before using drilling machines, powered saws, rotary tools, or unfamiliar holding fixtures.
Drill an entry hole for piercing
Place the hole fully inside the waste, with room for the blade and the first turn. Support the work, secure it against rotation, and use the bit, speed, lubrication, guarding, and eye protection specified by the machine and instructor.
Deburr only enough to thread the blade safely. Reinstall and tension the blade before returning the work to the bench pin.
Saw the path
Start with short, controlled strokes until the kerf is established. Then use a steady vertical rhythm and light forward guidance. The teeth do the cutting. Side pressure twists the blade and can widen the kerf or cause a break.
For a curve, rotate the work gradually while the blade continues to move. For a sharp internal corner, either approach from two directions or pivot in a small relief area while maintaining motion. Select the method according to the final corner radius and finishing allowance.
Pause when visibility, support, or body position deteriorates. Reposition the work rather than reaching across it.
File and inspect
Saw marks are not a reason to erase the design line blindly. Compare the cut with the datum, template, mating part, and required dimensions.
Use a file shape that contacts the intended surface without bruising its neighbor. Secure a handle on files designed to take one. File with controlled strokes, clear chips safely, and check often under consistent light.
Finish when the geometry, edge condition, and dimensions meet the drawing. A mirror-bright edge is not useful if the opening has become oversize or asymmetrical.
Cleanup record
Count broken blade pieces and retrieve them. Brush filings into the correct sweeps or waste stream, not onto the floor or into a known-alloy bin without shop approval. Record the blade, stock, pattern version, cut allowance, and correction notes for repeat work.
Common questions
Why do jeweler's saw blades break?
Common contributors include poor tension, side loading, forced feed, weak support, damaged blades, and difficult turns. Inspect the actual break and setup.
Should I cut directly on the line?
That depends on the line convention and finishing allowance. Mark the keep side before cutting.
Can filing correct every wandering cut?
No. Filing removes more metal. Stop before the remaining geometry or symmetry is lost.
Is piercing the same as drilling holes?
No. Drilling creates the entry hole; the threaded saw blade defines the interior cutout.
