What to take away
- Inspect the frame, clamps, blade, bench pin, lighting, and eye protection before touching the work.
- Confirm pattern scale, keep side, reference points, minimum webs, and finishing allowance.
- Stop if the blade binds, visibility fails, or support moves; more force is not a correction.
- Inspect geometry before filing, because filing can only remove metal.
- Record the setup and fault when the work will be repeated.
Use this checklist for manual sawing and piercing after hands-on instruction. It does not authorize drilling, powered cutting, or work on unknown, historic, hazardous, or high-value objects.
Before the job
- Stock identity, form, thickness, temper, and ownership are documented.
- The drawing or template has a version and verified scale.
- Datum, centerline, keep side, waste, and cut allowance are visible.
- Minimum webs and structural sections have been reviewed.
- Surface protection will not hide the cut or contaminate later work.
- The planned sequence leaves enough support for later openings.
For symmetrical work, add paired measurement points rather than relying only on a centerline. For a mating seam, state whether the line is the final edge or a filing boundary.
Frame and blade
- Frame is straight enough for the intended work.
- Handle and blade clamps are secure and undamaged.
- Blade size suits the stock and smallest curve.
- Teeth face the cutting direction specified for the technique.
- Blade is straight, clean, and free from damaged sections.
- Tension is consistent and the blade tracks in one plane.
- Spare blades and a safe broken-blade container are available.
Do not continue with a clamp that slips under load. A blade that repeatedly breaks at the same clamp calls for inspection of the clamp edge, alignment, and installation method.
Bench pin and body
- Bench pin or support is secure.
- Cutout supports the work close to the blade.
- Work does not rock on debris or a damaged surface.
- Lighting shows the tooth line without glare.
- Seat height permits a relaxed shoulder and near-vertical saw motion.
- Feet and chair support a stable position.
- Free hand stays beside the work and out of the blade path.
GIA's bench-pin ergonomics lesson shows that a bench pin can be modified for specific holding and cutting tasks. Treat any modification as a designed fixture: preserve strength, secure it, smooth hazardous edges, and test the work position before use.
Starter hole
- Entry location is fully inside the waste.
- Hole size permits safe threading without consuming the finished boundary.
- Drilling equipment and work holding are appropriate and inspected.
- Required guarding and eye protection are in place.
- Hair, sleeves, cords, and jewelry are controlled.
- Burr is removed only as needed for handling and threading.
- Blade is retensioned after threading.
During the cut
- Start with short strokes until the kerf is stable.
- Use a vertical rhythm and light forward guidance.
- Rotate the work for curves instead of twisting the frame.
- Keep support close as the work changes orientation.
- Reposition before the arm, wrist, or view becomes awkward.
- Support waste near the end of a closed cut.
- Stop and diagnose binding rather than increasing force.
Filing and inspection
- Work is measured before any correction.
- High spots are marked and low spots are preserved.
- File shape fits the surface and carries a secure handle where designed.
- Adjacent faces, detail, and marks are protected.
- Chips are cleared safely rather than brushed by hand.
- Opening size, corner radii, symmetry, and edge condition meet the drawing.
- Finish allowance remains.
The CCA handbook's community-bench rules tells users not to cut, file, or sand into the bench and to clean the surface and bench tray after work. Those rules support shared-space discipline; follow the procedures of the shop that controls your bench.
Closeout
- Broken blade fragments are accounted for.
- Work, offcut, and test coupon retain the stock ID.
- Filings enter the correct sweeps or waste stream.
- Frame is unloaded or stored according to shop practice.
- Bench pin, chair, light, and tools are returned safely.
- Deviations and corrections are added to the traveler.
- Repeat work records blade, stock, support, allowance, and inspection result.
Common questions
How tight should the blade be?
Use the frame and blade maker's guidance and a consistent trained setup. Do not reduce the decision to sound alone.
Should the bench pin move at all?
No unintended movement should occur during the cut. Stop and secure or replace it.
Why inspect before filing?
Filing removes metal. Measurement identifies where removal is allowed and where it would enlarge the error.
What belongs in the repeat-work record?
Record the actual stock, blade, pattern version, support, allowance, fault, correction, and measured result.
